Is finasteride legal in Dubai? A doctor's guide to safe hair loss prescription in the UAE

Finasteride is the clinically supported oral medication for male pattern hair loss. It is also the most googled hair loss question in the UAE, usually phrased: is finasteride legal in Dubai. The short answer is yes, with a prescription from a UAE-licensed doctor. The longer answer covers cost, dose, side effects and how to actually start.

Is finasteride legal in the UAE?

Yes. Finasteride 1mg (the hair loss dose, brand name Propecia) and 5mg (the prostate dose, brand name Proscar) are both registered with MOHAP and sold in licensed UAE pharmacies. They are prescription-only. Importing finasteride from abroad without a UAE prescription is technically not permitted and risks confiscation at customs.

How much does finasteride cost in Dubai?

  • Generic finasteride 1mg, 30 tablets: AED 80–150 depending on pharmacy.
  • Branded Propecia, 28 tablets: AED 350–500.
  • Topical finasteride solution: AED 250–400 per month, depending on concentration.

Does finasteride actually work?

Yes, in roughly 90% of men with male pattern hair loss. About two-thirds see visible regrowth and one-third see their hair loss stabilise without further thinning. Results show at 3 to 6 months and peak around 12 months. Stop the medication and the benefit reverses within a year.

Side effects: the honest version

Large randomised trials show sexual side effects (reduced libido, erectile changes, mood changes) in roughly 1.5 to 4% of men on finasteride 1mg, with most resolving on stopping. Real-world rates reported in surveys are higher, partly because anxious anticipation of side effects raises the chance of experiencing them. A starting dose of finasteride 1mg three times a week (instead of daily) is a reasonable way to test tolerance in patients who are nervous; weekly bloodwork is not needed.

Finasteride alternatives if you do not tolerate it

  • Topical finasteride. Same active molecule, applied to the scalp. Materially lower systemic exposure.
  • Dutasteride 0.5mg (off-label for hair loss in the UAE). Stronger DHT reduction, sometimes used for non-responders.
  • Oral minoxidil 2.5mg, with or without finasteride.
