Retatrutide vs tirzepatide: should UAE patients wait for the next-gen drug?

Retatrutide is the most-hyped weight loss molecule in development. Here is what UAE patients should actually know before delaying treatment.

Retatrutide vs tirzepatide: should UAE patients wait for the next-gen drug?

Patients in Dubai and Abu Dhabi increasingly ask us whether they should hold off on tirzepatide and wait for retatrutide — the triple agonist (GLP-1 / GIP / glucagon) currently in late-stage trials. The short answer: no. Here is why.

What retatrutide is

Retatrutide hits three gut and metabolic hormone receptors instead of tirzepatide's two. Early Phase 2 data showed average weight loss of around 24% at 48 weeks at the highest dose — meaningfully better than tirzepatide. That is genuinely exciting.

Why waiting is usually the wrong call

  • Retatrutide is not approved anywhere yet. Phase 3 read-outs are pending and regulatory review usually takes 12–24 months after that.
  • It is not legally available in the UAE. Anything sold as 'retatrutide' here right now is unregulated, unverified, and potentially dangerous.
  • Tirzepatide already produces life-changing results for the vast majority of patients. Waiting 2–3 years for marginally better numbers is rarely worth the metabolic cost of those years.

What we recommend

Start with what is proven, regulated and available — tirzepatide prescribed and supervised by a UAE licensed physician. When retatrutide gains MOH approval, your doctor can review whether switching makes sense for you based on real Phase 3 data, not Instagram screenshots.

The best weight loss medication is the one your doctor is allowed to prescribe and can supervise safely. Today, in the UAE, that is tirzepatide.
